Bridgeport is building momentum for a greener, healthier future—but with government funding for environmental projects cut back, many of our partners are stretched thin. That’s where you can step in and make a real difference.
The Sierra Club Connecticut Chapter is teaming up with the City of Bridgeport, BEEPort, Groundwork Bridgeport, Aspetuck Land Trust, the Nature Conservancy, and other environmental groups to take on key projects that directly impact lives in Bridgeport neighborhoods:
-
Microforest Planting – Also known as pocket forests, these dense plantings of native trees and shrubs can grow up to 10 times faster than traditional forests, store more carbon, and provide incredible habitats for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. Microforests have been planted around the world since the 1970s (based on the Miyawaki method), and now they are bringing their benefits right here to Bridgeport. These planting projects need volunteers to become a reality.
-
Bioswales Upkeep – Bioswales are green channels that capture stormwater, filter out pollutants, and reduce flooding. Bridgeport is significantly impacted by storms, and with climate change and more intense rain events, maintaining bioswales is crucial to protecting Bridgeport’s neighborhoods and waterways. Join us to help upkeep bioswales in Bridgeport.
-
Native and Invasive Species Work – We need your help to identify and remove invasive plants and insects that threaten our ecosystems. As you might know, the spotted lanternfly is a major concern, as it damages trees and crops. Its favorite host, the Tree of Heaven, is an invasive plant itself—but knowing how to identify and remove both is part of protecting our local environment.
These projects don’t just build healthier ecosystems—they also build stronger communities. With Remington Woods on the path to permanent conservation, Bridgeport is already seeing more funding for green infrastructure. But funding alone isn’t enough. What we truly need are hands, hearts, and voices.
Over the coming weeks and months, the Sierra Club Connecticut Chapter will connect volunteers to these projects. By volunteering, you’ll not only help restore and protect green spaces, but also gain knowledge about ecology, conservation, and climate resilience that you can share with others. This is a chance to learn, grow, and be part of something bigger than yourself—making a visible difference in the largest city in Connecticut. Let’s turn these challenges into opportunities for Park City!
