New Canaan becomes Connecticut’s 5th town to restrict gas-powered leaf blowers.

On May 20 the New Canaan Council voted 8 to 4 in favor of banning gas-powered leaf blowers from the Saturday before Memorial Day through Labor Day.  The new ordinance goes into effect on June 1 of this year. New Canaan joins the ranks of Norwalk, Westport, Greenwich, and Stamford in limiting these super polluting machines.  If you are interested in banning gas-powered leaf blowers in your town contact Sierra Club volunteer Vincent Giordano.

Ridgefield held its 2nd annual buy back of gas-powered lawn care equipment.

During Earth Week the Ridgefield Action Committee for the Environment held its annual buy back for Ridgefield Residents.  Residents willing to exchange a hand-held, gas-powered leaf blower, chainsaw, string trimmer, or lawn mower received a $50 Lowe's coupon to buy any battery-powered tool, battery, or charger of their choice.  It was a 2-hour pop up event, and it generated a truckload of equipment for recycling and proper disposal.
