In Favor of Restricting Gas Powered Leaf Blowers

88 percent of Connecticut readers voted to restrict gas powered leaf blowers (7 to 1 in favor).
The CT Insider recently held a social media vote on leaf blowers. CT Insider's most recent "Sound Off" campaign juxtaposed two articles about gas powered leaf blowers and asked the readers, which opinion matches your own. The author arguing FOR restrictions is Jeffery Kurz and the author arguing to keep the status quo is Anthony Branciforte. No surprise, I voted for Jeffery Kurz's point of view. So did an overwhelming number of readers. 88 percent of the readers agreed that we need to restrict gas powered leaf blowers.
In addition to voting, many left comments about the super-polluting nature of these antiquated machines, and the need to change our landscaping practices to adopt more sustainable approaches. You can read the results and reader comments here.
All of us have the power to change our individual practices and lead by example. When your gas powered equipment reaches end of life, buy an electric model. If you use a commercial landscaper, ask them to convert to battery technology. If they refuse, find someone that is willing to use equipment that is better for the environment and their workers. Or, do what I did — buy the battery leaf blower for the neighbor's landscaper to use on your neighbors property.
The Sierra Club has published a lawn and garden equipment policy which promotes a just transition to sustainable landscaping practices. In addition, Sierra Club Connecticut has advocated for State and local laws to promote sustainable landscaping practices. We are currently supporting Stamford's proposed ordinance and will be advocating for a State lead by example bill again in 2026. Join us. It's our voices that the elected officials need to hear — not the leaf blowers.
