Across  Connecticut, towns and cities are already dealing with the costs of  climate change, washed-out roads, flooded neighborhoods, damaged  infrastructure, and rising emergency response costs. And too often,  those costs fall directly on local taxpayers.

That’s why municipal resolutions are such a powerful tool in the fight for a Connecticut Climate Superfund.

Municipal  resolutions are one of the most direct forms of democracy we have. When  a town council or board of selectmen passes a resolution, they are  sending a clear message to state lawmakers: this issue matters here, to  real people, right now. It makes climate change local, immediate, and impossible to ignore.

And when multiple towns speak up, it builds something even more powerful to win!

One  resolution matters. Ten resolutions send a signal. Dozens create  pressure that lawmakers can’t ignore. When municipalities across the  state pass Climate Superfund resolutions, they show that support isn’t  limited to one region or one type of community. Lawmakers pay attention  when their own towns take action, especially when that message is coming  from across Connecticut.

These  resolutions also help shift the conversation. The Climate Superfund is  about a simple idea: the companies most responsible for climate  pollution should help pay for the damage it has caused. Right now,  municipalities are paying the price, repairing infrastructure,  responding to extreme weather, and investing in resilience, all while  local taxpayers shoulder the burden. Resolutions make that reality  clear, grounding the issue in real costs and real impacts.

This  strategy works. Local action builds credibility, creates visibility, and  gives people a meaningful way to move policy forward. It turns concern  into action and action into change.
