Sierra Club Endorses Richard
Blumenthal for the U.S. Senate Richard Blumenthal’s experience, values, integrity, energy, and dedication as the state’s Attorney General have been instrumental in creating strong environment protections for the state. Connecticut is a cleaner, healthier and more desirable place to live and work due to his diligence and efforts’ said Martin Mador, Political Co-Chair of the Sierra Club’s Connecticut Chapter. His role in enforcement of state law and as an advocate in the legislative and administrative arenas for strong protections has substantially improved the quality of life here. (For the complete endorsement statement, click on the press release) If you would like to download the Sierra Club endorsement questionnaire, please click on the picture of the questionnaire below: We invite you to join the Sierra Political Committee to work on endorsements with us for the elections this November. The Sierra Club is one of only 2 organizations in the state which issues a comprehensive set of endorsements based on environment positions. The PC will work on endorsements for both the legislature and statewide races. We will endorse in perhaps 1/3 of the senate and house races, in the governor's attorney general and secretary of state races, and possibly others. Members of the PC will: -help write the endorsement questionnaire -help evaluate the results -decide on early endorsements for incumbents we know well and have endorsed previously -participate in telephone interviews for other candidates, along with Sierra members from their districts -decide on all final endorsements
We take into account a candidate's voting record (if any), their responses to the questionnaire, their answers to the interview, their background, and any other information they provide us.
The process lets us celebrate our supporters, recognize those who have provided leadership on our issues, and provide an incentive to support us. It lets us identify new people who will become our heroes. We meet them early, become their friends, and start a relationship (if they win, of course), which serves us extremely well in the legislative process.
This is a great opportunity to help us choose strong environment candidates, and to help publicize our endorsements. You will get to learn about the political process from the inside. If you like, stay around to become a legislative insider as well when the state session starts in January.
Spend whatever time you can with us-there is no minimum commitment. For most people, this will entail only a few hours from now until the election. For others, it will become a great way to learn the election process you simply can't do any other way.
So, if you're sold, just drop me an email. Questions? Give me a call anytime.
Wondering what's the point of working on the state legislature? Does anything happen there? Well, in 2010 we worked on bills involving public campaign finance, greenhouse gas reduction, bicycle and pedestrian access ("complete streets"), the state DEP, solar energy, a renewable energy funding program called PACE, green jobs, farmland preservation, hydropower, open space funding, pesticides, recycling, regional government, sprawl/land use/smart growth, school energy and indoor air quality upgrades, toxics, river buffer protection, inland wetlands agencies, minimum streamflow standards for streams. The federal government may look sexier, but the state is where we get a lot of our work done.
