Inner City
Outings (ICO) is a community outreach program of the Sierra Club
that provides outdoor experiences for groups of individuals who
might not otherwise have them. Such groups include: inner city
youth of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, disabled persons,
and children with HIV.
ICO participants are drawn from a variety of agencies in the Greater
New Haven area. Current participants range in age from 7 to 15
and are from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in the City
of New Haven. For most of these children and youths, ICO represents
an unprecedented opportunity to get out of the city, experiment
with new recreational activities and explore new environments.
It also represents a consistent element in their lives -- something
they can look forward to from month to month and remember with
pleasure.
