What ICO Accomplishes
The ICO program provides participants with an ongoing activity, a
supportive group of peers and consistent mentorship from community adults.
ICO participants develop leadership, interpersonal, problem-solving skills
and increased self-esteem through active involvement with nature. They work
together to achieve challenging personal and team goals. ICO volunteers
benefit tremendously from their interaction with children and youths of
diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and from the opportunity to give
something to their community.

ICO Trips
In addition to trained and certified leaders, ICO furnishes all the equipment
and specialized clothing, which is needed for outdoor activities and the
curricular materials, which are used in educational programming. In most
cases, ICO also provides food and covers admission fees. All costs are paid
for by ICO. Activities include day hikes, camping, backpacking, canoeing,
sailing, bicycling, rafting, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, orienteering,
and more. Many outings also include an environmental education component, and
for three years, New Haven ICO participated in the Connecticut Statewide
Science Weekend. One important goal of the ICO program is to prepare youth
participants to become junior and assistant leaders. Click on a link below to
