GREATER HARTFORD GROUP MONTHLY MEETING

April 8th: Voluntary Simplicity, for Our Planet and for Ourselves
Voluntary Simplicity provides a much-needed framework for dealing with materialism and over-consumption and their resulting environmental, societal and spiritual damage, a condition that is known as “affluenza”. Voluntary Simplicity consists of an approach that is largely based on individual initiative and action, though the idea that our actions as individuals and groups of individuals, particularly as consumers, shape many of society’s dynamics, including our impact on the global environment.
Andrew Millard facilitates the Hartford Area Circle of Simplicity, hosted at the Unitarian Society of Hartford where he is chair of the Social Responsibility Committee. He became a life member of the Sierra Club after the 2000 elections, and was elected to the executive committee of the Greater Hartford Group this year.
Letter writing and refreshments start at 7pm. The speaker meeting starts at 7:30pm. There will be door prizes.
For more information, contact Andrew Millard at scientist@crimron.net or (860) 916-8411.

May 13th: Can Religion Save the Environment?
Members of faith communities are becoming the newest allies in the movement towards environmental advocacy and education. What can houses of worship add to the movement? What unique perspectives of faith houses brings people to this commitment? How can religious environmentalists contribute to the national consensus on Earth Care?
This presentation will be by Andrea Cohen-Kiener and Tom Carr of the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network. Rabbi Cohen-Kiener is the spiritual leader of Congregation Pnai Or of Central Connecticut and the director of IREJN. As a teacher, rabbi and community organizer, Andrea has practiced the art of bringing a spiritual perspective to problem solving for two decades. Theatre and musical concerts, educational forums, profound community building, writing and lobbying are among the tools that she has brought to bear in this field. Rev. Carr is pastor of the First Baptist Church, West Hartford and has been involved in issues of the environment and religious faith for the last fifteen years. He is one of the founders of IREJN and of Earth Prayers. He regularly preaches and leads workshops on creation care in religious communities. He actively promotes energy conservation and the purchase of renewable energy by faith communities.
Letter writing and refreshments start at 7pm. The speaker meeting starts at 7:30pm. There will be door prizes.
